So, here we are again, celebrating the uniqueness of ourselves for Women's History Month. The month is almost over but, we all know that we don't need no reminder of how great we really are (and, yes I used a double-negative on purpose)! We know that we are great because God created us to be the gender to carry the lessons of love and devotion. It is not by chance that we stand upon the shoulders of men, searching for every option to keep our families safe and strong, to keep our options open, and to keep are options close. This is why women are so unique. We are always strategizing on ways to make our situation better. It is no wonder that a woman led many, enslaved people to their freedom or that women, with their keen mathematical abilities, helped men land on the moon. On behalf of all our Queen Mothers, we should always give ourselves and one another the credit we so deserve. We are composed of boundless and limited energy. We take up space and fill it with beautiful memories. We give birth to life and hope. And, WE are who we are because God says so!

In Lauryn Hill's song featuring D'Angelo, "Nothing Even Matters", they sing about the passion between lovers. Nothing mattered but the time they were blessed to spend with one another. Now, let's look at this conceptually. Passion is whatever drives a woman to say that nothing even matters besides what makes her happy. And, what drives her doesn't have to be a man. In fact, it shouldn't be. What drives a woman towards her passion should be both tangible and intangible, meaning she should be able to eventually touch what she envisions. The product of her labor should be sweet, with the desire for her wanting to do it over and over again until she gains the quality and consistency she wants. Now that's passion!! Ladies set your foot upon the path of passion and don't stop until your dreams are fulfilled. Your wish is your command! And, your trust in God and yourself will make it so.

Some would have us to believe that we, African-Americans, have no culture. We are often reminded that our ancestors were enslaved and striped of our language and any social and spiritual practices from Africa. Some people have the audacity to say we should just forget this horrific time in history because it happened so long ago. And, some people, even immigrants, would have us to believe that we have no place in a country our Ancestors built! For me, the road once traveled will always be the road my feet stay upon. Why? Because no matter how dismissive and divisive some people can be, there is one irrefutable fact - African-Americans contribute to every industry in this Country - science, art, music, dance, politics, literature, humanitarian, medical, space, legal, etc. We have birthed ideas and invented master pieces, most of which have been misappropriated. After 400 years of slavery and many years of systematic oppression, we still remain strong and proud. We still are loving and forgiving people. Yes, we have our struggles with generational curses passed down from our oppressed conditions, but our uniqueness is our collective courage to keep going. I think I can speak on behalf of my people by saying - This month doesn't define who we are because WE ARE BLACK HISTORY all year round - and the way we love and survive in America is our culture!
